Impromptu Side Trip

Despite the unfortunate mishap of having our flight to HCMC canceled (no reason given... but we didn't bother asking), I am super, super, super excited that it was. Extra time in Hong Kong! So much to do in so little time..

We were originally supposed to be at the airport the next day by 12PM in order to catch the 420PM flight.. but only if we wanted to fly stand by... psh. A full day in Hong Kong if we fly the 840PM flight instead?
Yes please.

We were given vouchers for a dinner and breakfast buffet at the Hyatt... it's a shame that we had both lost our appetite by the time we checked into the hotel at 10PM. They had a surprisingly large variety of items - sushi, hot pot, steak, roast, pasta, etc.... but nothing was really outstanding.. Our waiter had mentioned to us that free drinks were included with our meal, but when we told him we wanted just water, he looked at us like we were crazy...

After sleeping in random and irregular 1-3 hour intervals during our 17 hour commute to Hong Kong, I found it surprisingly easy to wake up at 630AM the next morning. We were meeting my aunt for lunch at New Town Plaza in Shatin at noon, so we took advantage of the time that we had and went early to shop around. Unluckily for us, most of the shops we were interested in didn't open til 11AM or 12PM.

Lunch with my Aunt was at a restaurant called Crystal Jade (she picked it, knowing that I was particularly fond of siu long bao, or pork soup dumplings). The food was great.. the dumplings in Calgary don't hold a candle to the ones that we had here. And these aren't even considered the best! We also had two different la mien dishes (of which one I ordered was really tasty, but way too spicy...), fish, beef, and veggies.

After meeting with my aunt, we took it upon her recommendation and went upstairs to a dessert restaurant called "Honeymoon Desserts", who are well known for their mango sago. I had the mango sago myself, but I was also quite fond of the dessert that Jason ordered, which consisted of mango, grass jelly, shaved ice and vanilla "soup".

With about an hour and a half to spare before we had to head back to the hotel, we made our way to Fa Yuen Street, where we had gai dan jai/small egg cakes and did some shopping (although we didn't buy anything... we weren't able to pick up our luggage despite the layover... definitely will be returning when we go back in May though!)

Sorry for the lack of photos.. I was not on the ball about it that day...
Here's a photo of Jason being super keen about blogging though (HK airport):
