Night 20: Arrival in Hoi An

After a one hour flight from HCMC to Da Nang and a thirty minute drive, we'd arrived in Hoi An, a quaint little town in Central Vietnam. One of our fellow volunteers traveled to Hoi An via bus... it was an 18 hour bus ride, and according to him, one of the most traumatizing experiences of his life. Glad we went by air. One bus commute (see Nha Trang) on this trip was quite enough.

After checking into our hotel, we went for an evening stroll around town. The central part of town, called "Old Town", is small enough to walk from one end to the other in about 10-15 minutes.

Streets of Hoi An: little shops (mostly tailor, souvenir and art shops) and lanterns everywhere
Cafe des Amis has a different five-course set menu every night (depending on the mood of the chef, he will make whatever he feels like making that night!), from which you can choose meat, seafood or vegetarian. Jason went with the meat and I went with the seafood.
Balcony seats overlooking the river
Soup and Appetizers (CW from the bottom): Banh bao vac/White rose (Hoi An specialty; shrimp dumplings in rice paper dough), some meat thing.. we can't remember, Beef brisket soup served with crispy flatbread, and Crab soup.
Jason's dish #3: Spring rolls
(CW from the bottom) Jason's main: Stir fried noodles with Chicken, My main: Grilled fish served with pickled vegetables and crispy flatbread, My dish #3: Stir fried vegetables and squid served with crispy flatbread
Dessert! Banh Flan (or Caramel)... a very popular dessert in Vietnam. This is sold by street vendors everywhere in HCMC.
At 150,000 VND per person (about $7.50 CAN), this meal was on the pricy end! We were stuffed though, and couldn't even finish all the food we had been served.
